Statement by Hon. Dominic LeBlanc on the Fire at No Frills in Shediac

Posted on July 31, 2015 | No Comments

SHEDIAC – The Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, MP for Beauséjour, made the following statement regarding the fire which took place at No Frills yesterday:

“I am relieved that no patron or staff was hurt in this terrible incident. We can thank the Fire Departments of Shediac , Haute-Aboujagane and Cocagne, who rapidly got the fire under control and, once again, rushed towards the danger to help protect their neighbours and their community.

“Moments like yesterday prove we owe much to our firefighters and first responders. I am happy that Justin Trudeau has committed to putting in place a Public Safety Officer Compensation Fund, which would help the families of those who give their lives or become permanently injured in the line of duty while protecting us all.

“We can do more to help those who protect us. I often meet with firefighters, police officers, paramedics and prison guards, thank them for their service to our communities and try to determine ways the federal government can help. A Compensation Fund is needed and it’s time for it to be implemented.”

Mulcair’s Plan Doesn’t Back Him Up

Posted on July 30, 2015 | No Comments

For Immediate Release

July 30, 2015

Shediac, New Brunswick – Thomas Mulcair says he supports the middle class, but he would keep Stephen Harper’s plan to give government cheques to millionaires, said Liberal MP Dominic LeBlanc.

“Mulcair tries to talk a good game but his plan doesn’t back him up. There’s nothing there. And on critical issues like Quebec sovereignty, Thomas Mulcair is saying different things to different people all over Canada,” said Mr. LeBlanc, pointing to recent media reports about Mulcair’s contradictions:

“NDP Leader backs easy path for separatists to tear apart Canada… In the rest of Canada, Mulcair’s move to entice Quebec nationalists should be seen for what it really is – nakedly self-serving.” (Bob Hepburn, Toronto Star, July 4, 2015)

“Thomas Mulcair tap-dances around NDP contradictions… The NDP leader weaved his way between competing positions that threaten to get him trouble in one part of the country or another… policies that are winners for them in Quebec, are toxic for them in the rest of the country.” (National Post, July 20, 2015)

“We don’t know which Thomas Mulcair will show up today in New Brunswick, but local families will see they’re not getting the straight facts from the NDP. Mulcair’s lofty talk about the middle class isn’t backed up by any meaningful plan,” said Mr. LeBlanc, noting five specific examples:

  1. The NDP’s so-called “federal minimum wage” is deliberately misleading – it would only apply to less than 1 per cent of the Canadian workforce. (Toronto Star, September 16, 2014)
  1. The NDP opposes Justin Trudeau’s plan to save middle class families up to $1,350 per year by lowering the middle class tax bracket.
  1. The NDP opposes Justin Trudeau’s plan to ask Canada’s top one percent to pay a little more so middle class families can pay less. (Huffington Post, September 17, 2013)
  1. The NDP is publicly urging wealthy parents to give away federal child care cheques – at the same time Mulcair is sticking with Harper’s plan to keep giving the cheques to the wealthiest Canadians. (Canadian Press, July 24, 2015, Globe & Mail, March 25, 2015)
  1. The NDP’s day care subsidy isn’t income tested, which will deliver large benefits to high-income Canadians. (National Newswatch, October 15, 2014).

“Liberals would give families more money to help with the high costs of raising their kids and give middle class Canadians a $3 billion tax break by making our taxes fairer – Thomas Mulcair’s NDP opposes both,” concluded Mr. LeBlanc. “Justin Trudeau is the only one with a plan for real change to grow the economy, help the middle class, and bring back fairness.”

The Liberal Plan:

  • We would give families more money to help with the high costs of raising their kids.
  • We would give middle class Canadians a $3 billion tax break, by making our taxes fairer.
  • We would cancel Harper’s new income splitting – which only helps a small minority of families – and other tax breaks and benefits for the wealthy.

Statement by Hon. Dominic LeBlanc on the commemoration of the Great Upheaval

Posted on July 28, 2015 | No Comments

SHEDIAC – The Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, MP for Beauséjour, made the following statement today on the 260th anniversary of the start of the Great Upheaval with the decision to deport the Acadian people:

“Today marks 260 years since the Great Upheaval started with a decision taken by the British authorities at the time, on July 28th, 1755., to deport the Acadian people. Today, we remember the families that were ripped apart and the numerous people who lost their lives.

“While the objective was to put an end to the Acadian people and its identity, the Acadian community has rebuilt itself, redefined itself and endures to this day, stronger than ever. The number of Acadian symbols through my travels across the country are proof of the pride and tenacity of this people without borders that courageously came back to live close to the lands where they originally settled.

“In less than a month, all Acadians will be celebrating their National Holiday and I cannot think of a better response, 260 years later, than to show that we are still there, and proud of it.”
